Consumer Reviews & Ratings: (All) - TOTO DRAKE CST743S |
| REVIEW by Jefferson, PA 10/21/2011 | Date Purchased: 07/2011
Overall Rating: 10/10
Flush Rating: 10/10
Ease of Installation: 10/10 " Ok so I'm an engineer by trade and always do my research. I actually bought this from National Builders - they have the best pricing on these - it's actually HM Wallace.
We remodeled our master bath recently. As part of this we certainly needed a new toilet as the old one, while functional, was maroon (yeah ... bad I know). I considered the Drake II for the sanigloss finish but it seemed like it was only available in the higher format and my girlfriend is short so this just wouldn't have been as comfortable for her. The Drake is available in the Drake and Drake II and there are differences.
The remodeled master bath has amazing gorgous natural stone travertine tiles on the floor and throughout the shower. The last thing we wanted was a toilet that was overly bright, so that the tiles took center stage. So we went with Toto's Colonial White, rather than Cotton White. It's perfect. It is still white just not glaringly so. Other people have written that Colonial White was like a "white with a touch of grey added in". And we feel this is accurate and also useful as we went with a light grey for the walls. Bear in mind the Toilet doesn't look "light grey" - it's just a nice muted white and doesn't scream, "Hey Look at ME ... I'm a Toilet".
We decided to go with the Drake rather than Drake II, because it has a high gram capacity and I wanted the best possible gravity system available for this remodel. The bathroom is very unique as it is a LONG horizontal run from the sewer main. Also the only venting that I was able to add was a 3" run from a Y just under the toilet to a nearby air admittance valve. The home is historic so it would be near impossible or quite expensive to add a proper outside vent. So the best I was about to do was add that air admittance valve and hope for the best. The old toilet seemed to work well enough with NO venting (unless one counts a crack in the old cast iron pipe as venting ...). Ok so at least the new one would have SOME venting ... :-)
Also the piping itself is unique. It first goes one way down the length of the bathroom, about 6', then curves around 180 degrees to run about 15' back to a 90 where it FINALLY goes out and connects to the horizontal main to the outside. I redid all the lines under the master bath from scratch, replacing ancient cast iron with 4" PVC (yeah I know I could use 3" but I wanted overkill). I also used a mix of 22.5 and 45 couplings to minimize the turns so the water slug would have the smoothest possible path, and double-checked the slight drop in level all the way through. Anyway, with all these considerations, I wanted a monster toilet that could handle it's normal job and really blast that water slug down that twisty curvy exit path.
We have now had the Drake for several months of regular use and are VERY pleased with it. There is a slight gurgling at the end of the flush. I expected that to be from the less-than-optimal venting that i could provide. Apparently, this seems to be somewhat common to this unit? The majority of the time, we just use the "quick flush" instead of the "full flush option", even when pushing out a deuce, and ... WAM! Everything disappears faster than we would really believe. I have to admit that I have flushed it a few times just for the fun of it. I'm super impressed by the speed and force of the flush.
A Plunger? We still own it but can't imagine ever needing it again, at least not in that bathroom. We have used the brush a bit here and there but not too much really.
A few years ago I had to replace a toilet upstairs in one of my rental units. At the time, it seemed like a good idea to try out the American Standard Cadet 3, based on the info at one of the big box stores. I didn't do my usual thorough research for that one but it just didn't seem overly necessary since that toilet is a mere 3 feet from the main vertical sewer stack that emtpies directly down into the horizontal main 2 floors below. This vertical pipe is also fully vented to the roof just above that unit.
Ok! So now I can compare the performance of a Drake, with a HUGE horizontal run and vented merely by an air admittance valve - to a Cadet 3 with a TINY run and MASSIVELY vented. My gosh, there is just no comparison. The flush of the Drake is VASTLY more forceful and quick. Last night I examined part of the horizontal main where I added a cleanout valve. And ... it's all nice and clean. As I had hoped and tried my best to plan for, all the water slugs have actually made it all the way from the Drake down some 25' of piping that doesn't even include the final 15-20' ... all the way to the sewer main. Sweet!
A few weeks ago I ordered a second Drake, same color and model for our main floor bathroom. The toilet in that bathroom is TERRIBLE, always has been, and isn't vented AT ALL. It has trouble just trying to flush water. Well we got lucky and a house guest this past weekend tripped and cracked that toilet - how AWESOME. So, now we HAD TO replace it instead of merely wanting to. Eventually, we'll rip that bathroom out entirely and move it to the rear of the house (and install venting) but now we know how well the Drake performs with no venting whatsoever in the current main bath.
Even with no venting nearby whatsoever, the Drake performs PERFECTLY, regardless of #1 or #2. The sink and/or shower will gurgle a bit at the end of a flush, so I'll install a small air admittance valve under the sink to relieve that situation.
Again - the Drake is perfect and I will never buy anything other than a Toto.
We also love the soft close seats - they are very well made and work perfectly. "

Ease of Installation: 9/10 " I've had this toilet for several years. Not once has it clogged or not cleaned its bowl after use. (I have round bowl, which has larger water spot than elongated) I had to use pliers to fix the broken chain to the red flapper, but not a big deal. I'm amazed this toilet works so well w/so little water. I have slightly weak water pressure, but this G-MAX seems to beef up the water pressure so that it gets a good flush. Not too noisy. I wish they made a Toto Drake with a more traditional style, like a decorative rim at the bottom. This style is too modern for my old fashioned cottage. But not a big deal. I am buying another Drake for my guest bath. The installer installed my Drake with no problems. "

Ease of Installation: 8/10 " When I built my home I put in Drakes(5 in all). Initially, I was so impressed with the performance compared to the toilets in my last home. Toward the end of the 3rd year I started having to replace the flappers. So far I've fixed 4 of the 5. Now they're having a new problem. 3 of the 5 are now having a long delay before they begin to refill after a flush. I'm not so impressed any more. One would expect a longer, problem free product from a higher price toilet. By the way, my in laws also have 3 drakes and have been having the same problems. "

Ease of Installation: 10/10 " We had 3 Gerber toilets, had flooring replaced and had trouble re-installing the original toilet. Talked to a plumber friend and he suggested a Toto.
Purchased one and had him install it. We liked it but it was in a half bath and we used it very little, mainly for company. The toilet in the master bath acted up so we pulled it and had another Toto Drake installed. We are very pleased with both the Drakes, no problems at all. They flush well and refill quickly. One Gerber left and if we have trouble with it, it is history. "

Ease of Installation: 10/10 " Three years ago contractors created a new bathroom for me and I had them install an Eljer Titan toilet based on consumer's report. It operates magnificantly. I tried to buy 2 more for my other newly renovated bathrooms but I was unable because Eljer has apparently been purchased by American Standard. I was told it would take some time before I can purchase the Titan.
I therefore researched other options and I now have 2 Toto C743E#01 (rounded) toilets. One is currently installed and I think it is marvelous. It flushes so well that I think if someone threw a frisbee in the vicinity of the bathroom the Toto would reach out grab it and flush it down. It is noticeably small but perfect in smaller area bathrooms. I recommend both the Eljer Titan and the Toto Drake toilets. You can't go wrong. I gave a 10 rating in all categories even though I did not personally install it. The plumber installed it without any difficulty. I feel sure I will not have any problem with the 2nd Toto. "

Ease of Installation: 7/10 " The only good thing about this toilet is that it flushes well, but I would NEVER buy one again! The configuration of the bowl and the low water level make it a nightmare to keep clean. It should come with a brush that automatically cleans the bowl every time you flush because that's what you need to do manually! It's a horrible design! Even the nooks and crannies on the outside are dirt traps. How I wish we didn't pick this brand. It ruined the joy of my new bathroom. Keep away from this brand! "

Just need a gentle coaxing with the plunger (which wasn't a tight fit). Now though, the flushing mechanism is starting to act up. Never any problems with debris after use. No more than any other toilet. I will get another for the basement. "

Use two pliers to open hog ring and move chain to drilled hole. Bend brass rod down about 1/2". Shorten Chain. Hold down handle until bowl clears if solids present. Walla! No solids, flush as usual! Nothing I have ever owned even worked half as well as this toilet--it literally flushes in 3 seconds (it is a little louder than most toilets but not bad) and the tank fills back in less than 10 seconds. It will flush anything--I think it would flush a brick!! Also it was very reasonably priced--I paid $288 including a new seat and tax. "

Perhaps I was expecting too much from a low-flow toilet, but it needs to be cleaned at least as often as the old toilet it replaced. I don't think the coating is worth the extra cost. Because I living where I had to have the toilet shipped, I was concerned that it arrive intact. No need to have worryied: the packaging was the safest I have seen. "

Ease of Installation: 4/10 " I installed the Toto Drake last year based on rave product reviews. Although its clog rate is lower than my Kohler low-flush, unclogging it is awful. Due to the ridges in the bowl, a standard plunger cannot get good closure on the bowl. Splashing of unclean water is unpreventable if this toilet clogs, so you need both a plunger and a mop to unclog it. My next toilet will have a smooth bowl. As far as installation goes, it was easy except that the flange I was installing it on protruded from the floor by about 3/8 inch. Due to the limited clearance around the throat of the outlet, I was required to put the toilet up on a plywood shim to prevent it from rocking on the flange. Other toilets I have installed have more clearance around the outlet. "

Try Kohler's Class 5 toilets. My brother bought one for his house and it's cleanly and never has clogged even after several tests from me. "

I would definitely buy from you again. "

Ease of Installation: 10/10 " I was fearful of the reviews, neighbor's with 1.6 toilets to a person wished for the return of their old toilet. On vacation our hotel had Toto El Drake, we've replaced all 3 toilets in our home with the El Drake with sana-gloss. "

Ease of Installation: 9/10 " Great toilet. I have gone from constant clogging to a perfect flush. I don't like the 3 inch gap between the back of the tank and the wall. Other than that, it's a really really good toilet. "

Ease of Installation: 10/10 " We bought this toilet and have used it for the last 2 months. It was replacing a 30 year old toilet that was original with the house. What a difference! After reading the great reviews, we bought the Toto Drake and it did not disappoint. The flush is very smooth and forceful. There have been no problems with clogs at all since we've had it. There has also been a noticeable savings in our water bill. The plumber that installed it said that it was a great toilet. It is also very easy to clean with standard brushing and toilet cleaner. "

Ease of Installation: 10/10 " The Drake could use more water. It does have to be cleaned daily, because there isn't enough water to remove all the waste. I'd like a toilet with the same power, but with more water to rinse the bowl. "

Ease of Installation: 10/10 " This toilet replaced a 1974 Briggs toilet. What a difference! I love it! Even though there's nothing wrong with my other 1974 toilet, I'm tempted to replace it with another Drake. "
