EDITOR'S REVIEW
The elongated two piece CST414M Aquia toilet was released in May of 2005 and is TOTO's first attempt at a dual-flush toilet in the North American market. Featuring a Gravity Feed (Dual-Max) flush and a 2-1/8" trap diameter, the Aquia is revered as a water saving alternative to single flush 1.6 Gpf toilets and has been extremely popular since its launch. Being a dual-flush toilet, the Aquia has the capacity of flushing just 0.9 Gpf when prudent. Unlike most skirted toilets from TOTO which can fit multiple rough-in lengths, this toilet is only capable of fitting a standard 12" rough-in. The Aquia is packaged with a seat not included and is backed by a 1 year limited warranty.

" Calgary Canada here. Bought last week. This is the best toilet ever. I can't understand all these negative comments! It flushes perfectly every time. The "poop" flush is actually way better than our old as the water flushes with more force - not more water! We are going to be changing all our toilets this year to this one. We have calculated we will save 98,000 LITRES OF WATER PER YEAR!! Awesome. "

" Flushes okay and the dual flush is a nice feature but needs some major re-engineering. The low water level in the bowl combined with a rather weak wash make this a toilet for people who don't mind cleaning it each and every time they use it. "

The installation is very diffrent than any other toilet. Read the directons before you start. It has a lot of flush power and it lives up to everything they say about Toto. "

" So far Love the product. All 1.6 gpf tanks have less water in the bowl than the conventional 3.5+ gpf tanks, unless you have a real cheap version of a 1.6 gpf. I have had no problems with flushing using either .8 or 1.6 flush. Installation was a breeze. First one was about 1.5 hours second one was less than an hour. Granted I don't have tile floors. I would recommend this to anyone. Directions are a little confusing, and when you put on the gasket it sits higher up than some of my other (older) toilets but when you push down and tighten up the bolts it seats nicely. I would recommend this to others due to ease (other than tiled floors). "

" Never having installed a US-style toilet before (what's with those wax rings anyway, sheesh!), I figured the hassle drilling holes was just part of the deal. Fortunately the ceramic drill bits came in a two pack, so after I'd messed up one, I was able to finish drilling the (brand new) tile floor with the others. But it all came together and ... wow. Compared the shoddy builder-supplied toilet that blocked every second day, this was amazing. We always use the low flush which somehow clears the bowl of the roll of toilet paper others in the family seem to need every time. The trickle was disconcerting at first, but I'd forgotten about it until reading the reviews here. And why am I here? We're moving house, and my wife insists on replacing the toilets there with the same one ... Hmm, time to find more drill bits! "

" I have installed and used normal Toto toilets for years, but this dual-flush model is disappointing on several levels: (1) Installation is much more difficult than a conventional toilet (2) There's a bothersome trickling sound that makes one think it is leaking (3) Flush quality for the big flush is well below that of the other Toto toilets, and the low flush has trouble with TP. So, even though I've been a Toto fanatic for years, this one does not get a passing grade. "

" So far a great toilet! Kids love it, they will bypass the other toilets just to use the toilet with the buttons. Template worked well and 6 holes were a breeze into a plywood floor. Was just able to fit with a water supply 6.25 inches from centre. Occasional (1 in 10) skid marks using the low flush setting but disappear with a second low setting flush; rarely use the high setting. Very pleased. "

" I love this toilet and am purchasing a second one; the prices have gone up. It has great flushing power. The special soft close seat is a must. Not only do I love the closing feature but if you sit up and back on it properly, it positions the payload to be deposited acurately at the target water. Once you sit properly, there are no problems with streaks. It works great for 116 pound me and 206 lb partner. Saving water and money are priorities as well as the stylish, smooth look of our Aquia in south Florida. Our contractor had no problem drilling into our tile floor with the instructions from websites, which I provided after reading the included instructions had wrong drill bit size. "

" I bought 3 bone coloured toilets and soft closing seats. They took about six weeks to arrive which surprised me. I want to thank those of you who posted previously as the advice to use a 5/16 inch tile bit was helpful as was the purchase of 20 inch flexible water line. I like the way they operate and I find that the water trickle is not bothersome once you get used to it. Most #2 can be flush using the low water button and I find little problem with dirty bowls if you sit on the seat properly. Installation took a bit more time for the first unit as i had a learning curve and after that I could have hired myself out to install them. The six holes mean a bit more work, but it is not horrendous by any means. Good toilets that look nice as well. "

" Never having installed a toilet before it seemed straight forward. Took my husband just under 2 hours with me reading the directions (on wood not tile floor). In that time we also had to saw off and replace a bad water supply valve before even starting with the toilet. Much easier to seat the wax ring than our old toilet where you had to try to set the very heavy toilet down on the bolts in a very tight bathroom. Trickeling noise after flushing is very annoying. Glad to hear that it is not a problem with our installation just a design flaw by Toto. When you open the seat it knocks the tank lid back a little and I am concerned my kids might knock off the tank lid as nothing holds it in place. "

" All the installation tips found here certainly helped: 1) Use a 5/16 or even a 3/8 bit 2) Mount seat before sliding toilet into the trap 3) Use a 20 inch flexible supply line It took about three hours to install including removing the old toilet. I burned through three carbide-tipped drill bits installing this on top of very hard tiles. My supply valve was only 6 1/2 inches off the centerline of the toliet and I had no problem. The instructions say you need 8 inches but you don't if your the supply doesn't stick out from the wall too far. Toliet looks great and flushes like a champ on both settings. This toliet has the seat farther off the ground than standard which might be a problem for people with short legs. "

No knowledge of installation difficulties as I had it professionally installed, however I did not receive any complaints. "

" Great toilet - love its look with the skirting and the push buttons and its operation is definitely top notch. Only disconcerting thing that I've read that I agree with is the trickling noise. No biggie though. Installation (my first toilet installation) was pretty simple. Just needed to run out and grab ceramic bits for the drill to put a few holes in the tile. "

" I’m writing this review to help anyone looking for more info on this toilet and its installation. If you object to hearing references to #2 then you better not read this. I’m not trying to be gross; I just believe it’s necessary for an accurate review of this toilet. I researched dual flush toilets for a couple months before buying the Aquia II. Several things led me to this model, not the least of which was a lot of positive reviews. Before I begin I want thank some of the other reviewers for some very helpful hints. First of all, this toilet probably isn’t for everyone. If you regularly have messy/loose #2 in large quantity and wad up tons of toilet paper, then you might want to look elsewhere. If your “payload” lands outside the “target area” it can leave residue which may need to be cleaned with the toilet brush. If, on the other hand, your #2 is usually solid and of moderate quantity, the seat tends to position you so that your “payload” goes where it should, as another reviewer pointed out. I’m personally very happy with flushing performance; I get away with the .9 gallon flush about 90% of the time. I don’t think you could get much better performance out of so little water without going to a pressurized system. If you hadn’t guessed by other reviews, the installation can be a pain. Believe it. Do yourself a favor and read the instructions carefully. Make sure you have a 5/16” or 3/8” masonry bit for tile(I used 5/16), a 20” flexible water supply line, a nice level bathroom floor (I didn’t), a good quality wax ring (one without plastic on it) and plenty of time and patience. I say to use a wax ring without a plastic flange attached to it, because the first ring I used had one and it caused the plastic adaptor from Toto to not seat levelly when tightened down. Several other important hints: Be sure to tighten down the tank to the bowl all the way. You’ll know that it’s tightened all the way when the tank does not move back and forth at all on the bowl. Lastly, I marked (tape or whatever comes off) the flange centerline on the floor and on the toilet so I could match the markings when I placed the toilet and ensure that it is centered on the flange. I used the rubber friction bolts that come with the toilet to attach the toilet seat, not the plastic bolts that came with the seat itself. These allow you to install the seat according to the instructions, the other bolts would require you to install the seat before placing the toilet. "

" I would not buy this toilet again. It looks great but is hard to install and the water level is too low to keep the toilet bowl clean. There should be an adjustment for the water level. It is great to save water but if you have to use extra water to keep it clean, it defeats the purpose. "

" I installed three updated CST416M Dual-Flush toilets, which seem to be identical to the CST414M except for the mounting plate. These are much easier to install now that they have a flat direct mounting plate instead of that complicated U-shaped push-on mount that was in the CST414M. I read the instructions beforehand and they took about 25 minutes each to install on vinyl and 30 minutes on ceramic. The only issue I had was that the flush push rods in the lid were 3-4 mm too short to flush fully; TOTO sent replacement rods that I cut to the proper length, and all worked perfectly. The 0.9 Gpf on this toilet does flush with some toilet paper, and the full flush handles everything that my kids throw at it, which caused many plugs with the 1.6 Gpf American Standard that the builder installed. These Aquia II Dual-flush toilets are GREAT!! They work even better than the TOTO Ultimate toilets that we had in our last home. "

" I love this toilet! I did a lot of research on this site and others before buying and am so glad I bought this Toto. It did take about 4 hours for my husband to install, but it's worth it. We mostly use the half flush. I have tested it with corn based flushable kitty litter and it does a great job. If the kitty poops are dried out, though, it takes another full flush to get it down. I hope this info is helpful to other cat owners! "

" Having installed innumerable toilets from low flush to dual flush in apartments to houses, I can only conclude that this is absolutely garbage design ( despite materials which may be excellent) from the get go. Bad instructions on hole sizes drilled, leaks between toilet and tank, one shot install on the toilet to the plastic trap (took a ton of force with a come-along!) to get all four tabs into the slots, impossible to check by hand the tab-slot connection, as the bottom one would NOT go in. Then try screwing the tank to the toilet with a two foot long screwdriver and/or a skinny, long arm-and get it tight! I rarely diss products this badly but I cannot lie. This is worse than the Renovator's Supply dual-flush garbage. For such a high rating, I am amazed why people rated it so high. Nice toilet seat though! "

" I purchased 4 toilets. 2 were defective and we had water seeping out the bottom. Toto and the vendor replaced the defective traps, but the cost to have the toilets installed for the second time was excessive. Our plumber charged extra for this particular toilet due to the difficulty to install. Toilets were backordered, paid for in October and installed Jan 08. Be sure to get a plumber who knows how to install these as they are not the normal toilet. "

" This is not a hard product to install after you figure it out. The instructions are very poor. I put this in over a tile floor, the instructions call for a 1/4 inch drill bit but a 5/16th is the correct size. I still haven't been able to tighten the seat where there's no play. However, it's working great. "

" Great Toilet! It does have the annoying little trickle in the trap, but not a big deal. The installation was a little different. I did not read the instructions thoroughly, so maybe I was better off than everybody else. As for the flush, it is truely amazing. I think it is a great design. The .9 gal flush usually does the job. We have not had the problem with it leaving streaks. Once the trap is set on the ground, servicing this toilet is a snap. Two bolts and slide it forward and it is off. The low water level is great, no splashing. Overall I am very impressed with this design. saves a bunch of water! "

" I think the guy that designed this toilet never actually had to install one. I haven't even done #2 yet, and I'm ready to take it back. Fortunately I own other good TOTO toilets like the Soiree and the Carlyle, so I'm not giving up on the brand. I don't consider myself a master plumber, but I've installed a lot of toilets, and this was the hardest. Drilling into the tile is easy, if you have the right bit. But the whole design of how it attaches to the floor is poor, in my opinion. I also made the mistake of assuming I could install Takagi's heated seat (a nice product) by having access to the seat bolts. No way. I got it on, but I'll have to pull the toilet to remove the seat. You'll also have to pull the tank to remove the water supply from the fill valve when that needs to be replaced. I sit down for #1 (makes the wife happy). The trickle down the trap makes it sound like I'm peeing on the floor somewhere. Then, after you flush and the tank refills, the trickle continues for 30 seconds. Toto, please fix this. I pity the poor guy who has to remove this toilet (which might be me) in the future without the instructions, like when somebody wants new flooring or to relocate it or a repair is to be made. My floor template was wrong, so I had to reset the plastic hold down blocks by 1/8 inch just to barely get it to fit. I wanted so badly to get a dual flush. "

" As others have stated, instructions are poor, pictures are not very clear, but the toilet isn't too difficult to install. Be careful with the tile installation. Even a 5/16 tile bit wasn't quite big enough to set the anchors. The holes still needed to be reamed a little with a masonry bit, at least for our application. There are steps that seem to be out of order also. One that stands out for us was the seat install. You need to be a contortionist to install the nuts to the bolts once the toilet is secured as directed. Much simpler to install the seat before securing the toilet to it's base. I gave it a 9 due to two issues that I think should be adressed for a toilet of this price. There is no styrofoam inside the tank wall, therefore it sweats when humid. (our cheap $100. toilet had one) Next is the tank top. It does not seat in a groove or channel, just sits on top. Could be knocked off by kids. Flushes fantastic for a low flush toilet. I was very skeptical on these but I'm sold on it and would buy another when we renovate the second bathroom. "

" Great buy if you like a cool-looking toilet that saves water. I love it. Main warning is that is it is NOT easy to install if you have tile/stone floors. You need to drill 4 deep 5/16 - 3/8 inch holes (instructions say 1/4 inch which is way too small) to fit the plastic anchors and two 5/16 inch holes. Keep the drill bit cool by spraying water into the holes and patiently taking breaks to allow the bit to cool and you should have no problems. Had no problems with leaks as long as you evenly screw on both sides of the tank and use a little bit of plumber's putty. "

" After doing much research on the internet, I decided to go with a Toto. I'm from Canada, and I didn't like the idea of the low water level of the dual flushes. I figured that I'd be spending much time cleaning the sides of the bowl. After a trip to England, we noticed that all of the hotels had dual flushes which opened me up to the idea of a low water level. After 2 weeks with this toilet, I can say that it is absolutely amazing. The seat seems to centre the tush properly, and everything lands directly in the hole. The hole is designed with a steep vertical drop, so stuff doesn't slide down the bowl. One huge surprise to me, was the power of the flush that the toilet had with such a small amount of water. I thought that I'd run an experiment to see how far this toilet would go in the low flush mode before it became overwhelmed. To my complete surprise, my wife and I haven't had to use the high flush yet. That's right, the low flush has worked perfectly for everything we've thrown at it for 17 days now - everything goes down! Thanks Toto for this great product. "

It took me a whole day to install uninstall, measure, etc. The first toilet I had took 30minutes. The instructions are terrible. Had I known what I was in for I wouldn't have purchased it in the first place. "

" As a previous Caroma dual-flush owner, I had a high bar to rate this toilet against. If it wasn’t for the Caroma being extra elongated, I surely would have purchased another. In any case, I after reading these reviews and seeing how truly mixed they were, I thought long and hard before actually making my purchase. After three weeks, however, I can state unequivocally, that I am very happy with my purchase. To address so common themes: 1. Installation was not bad at all. It is definitely unique, but once you figure it out, it’s pretty straightforward. I would guess the second installation will take less than half the time of the first. 2. The flush is awesome. I have been able to use the .9 gallon flush for all waste. The key is to sit straight on the seat. If you sit sideways, you are likely to have some waste on the side of the bowl. 3. The low water level is the key to the toilet’s efficiencies. The Caroma had the same low water level, which did not mask all of the smells. The Toto, however, thanks to its unique design has overcome that. 4. The trickle that you hear, is odd. I would imagine that Toto might work to overcome that with future models. That’s the only reason I rated the toilet 9/10. It’s not a huge deal, and after a short time, you don’t ever really notice it. 5. The design is gorgeous. I don’t know that they’ll ever be able to come up with an easier to clean model. All in all, a great toilet. I can’t wait to put it in my other bathrooms. "

" It is simply ridiculous to have a toilet that only holds 2 cups of water in the bowl. There is a reason for the water in an old school toilet bowl, it reduces smell and keeps things clean. This toilet does neither of the above mentioned. And the sound of the trap draining is annoying. It looks good but only until you have a disgusting stain due to the lack of water in the bowl. " It flushes well. Looks nice. It does have the peculiar dripping sound in the PVC trap that sounds like leaks. Installation should be easy if you don't have extremely hard tile floor, where you'd suffer a lot of pain and sores, drilling six holes, which took me hours to finish! This is the first time I install a toilet, I regretted it because I have hard tiles. There's got be dual flush toilet that's easier to install. "

" If you're looking to save some water this is the toilet for sure. Installation took a bit longer because it is different that your standard toilet. If you're setting on tile and have a good subfloor for anchoring, skip the plastic anchors and drill only through the tile (NOT into Subfloor) to accommodate the screw-then appropriate pilot hole for the sub floor. Make sure your supply valve is at least 8 inch off center or you'll have to move it like I did... You'll need a 20 inch flex hose for supply hose. Anything shorter and you'll be pushing it. The soft close seat/lid is nice. It takes a really long time to close if you don't push part way down. If you close 3/4 of the way it closes quickly. It's comfortable too. Other comments note the trickle effect as your doing you business. I noticed it too but once I realized it wasn't the toilet leaking no worries. Lastly, to get a proper flush you need to hold down the flush button for a couple of seconds. If you do it flushes great. Given the water savings all of the above is inconsequential in the big picture. "

" flushes surprisingly well. Even the 0.9gpf can flush fair amount of tissues and solids. low water level doesn't really bother us and prevents splash. installation is definitely a chore, esp., since we're using granite tiles (ouch!) you need 5/16 inch (mentioned in the detailed steps but said 1/4 inch in the first page, obvious documentation error) *and* 3/8 inch masonry drill bits. 5/16 for all the 6 holes and 3/8 inch for widen the opening of 4 mounting block holes. Otherwise those 4 plastic posts won't fit. Make sure the holes don't drift too much during the drilling, otherwise it's quite painful to correct. Once the 6 holes is done, installation is fairly easy. If you have the soft close lid, you probably want install it before you install the bowl, unless you have a huge bathroom with no obstruction within 4ft of the toilet. It's the first time toilet installation for me. I don't think it's particularly hard unless you have extremely hard tile floors. "

" I wish I would have read some of reviews before buying this toilet. I might have reconsidered. The instructions, as far as the drill bit sizes, are incorrect. I spent 3 hours uninstalling the tank from the bowl and reinstalling, in an attempt to stop the leaks! I think I have stopped them, only after adding a second rubber washer to each tank bolt, so there is a rubber washer on each side of the metal one. Another frustration is that after a flush and the tank has stopped filling, you can hear water still flowing thru the PVC trap for at least 30 seconds afterwards. The water level in the bowl is very low, and I can see what that will mean. So far I am not impressed. "

" This week I installed 3 Toto Aquia CST414M toilets in my home.
The dual flush actions are very good. However, if your floor is tile please consider another toilet (see below).
I confirm the comments above of ckime, TX on 03/30/2006, and Jeff, NE 03/03/2006.

1. To install the toilet requires drilling of 6 deep new mounting holes, a very difficult thing in tile or concrete floors.

2. The intallation isn't confusing (after the first one), but the instructions are generally poor. The effort is very high for tile installation. The one instruction error is that for a tile or concrete floor you must use a 5/16 inch drill, not 1/4 inch (for the plastic anchors).

The tank must be screwed tight to the bowl so it doesn't rock, or it will leak.
The plastic trap makes a mildly annoying trickling sound sometimes.
If you are under 5'6 inch the seat is a little high (true of all toilets). "

" I just finished my installation last night so the details are fresh in my brain! First off, this was the first toilet installation that I have done, so others may have a much easier time. Personally, I found the installation took more time than I had hoped and I ran into some unexpected difficulties which I partly blame on poor instructions from Toto. First off, I installed on a hard tile floor, and the instructions recommend a 1/4 inch drill bit to make the hole for the plastic anchors that come with the toilet. I stupidly tried to make two of the plastic anchors fit in the drilled holes, ruining the anchors, before I drilled the holes with at 5/16 inch bit. Unfortunately, I still had to make a trip to the hardware store for 2 new plastic anchors. Okay, so now the PVC base is in place, the toilet is slid into place, and it's time to install the tank. I had flex hose from the water outlet on the wall, as the instructions recommend. However, when I went to make the connection to the tank, I found that 12 inch flex hose was not enough! Because the connection has to be made to the tank before the installation of the tank, I think you need a couple more inches than normal. Back to the store for the next longest size - 20 inch flex hose. Finally, the instructions are not very clear about the installation of the bolts that attach the tank to the bowl, but with a little common sense I think I figured out exactly where they went and what side attached below/from the tank. It just would have been nice if the instructions were more precise. I have had to re-tighten these bolts several times when noting a very small leak still coming from this spot - hopefully this is not a problem. As for the toilet itself, it seems to work great, other than the complaint noted earlier of the small water spot and the resulting odors when dealing with solids that do not get fully submerged. The flushing action is very good and the .9 option is definitely nice. "

" First off, the toilet was out of stock when I ordered it (no fault of HMWallace, it was out of stock in bone color everywhere), so it took 2.5 months to arrive. (However, HMWallace did charge my card back in October when I placed the initial order, which I wasn't too keen on, so beware of this.) The installation it self wasn't difficult, I'm just dinging Toto on it because I didn't like the fact that I had to drill 6 holes in my marble floor to mount the trap. Oh yeah, and because they forgot to include the gasket that fits between the tank and the bowl (a very key part). I really like the dual flush, but once so far it didn't provide the necessary scour action. Also, the trap is plastic so as liquid is added to the toilet and it displaces the water in the trap, you can hear a mildly annoying trickling sound. The soft-close seat is very comfortable, and I like the fact that it doesn't slam, but I wish it was designed to close 80-90% of the way with little resistance before catching and softly closing the rest of the way. I think this would eliminate the questions (e.g., Do you have to push the lid down everytime you close it? Overall, I like the design and I'm happy with our choice, I just hope Toto (and HWM) will address these (relatively) minor gripes to improve this product. "

The installation was so stupid, how can they expect people to drill so many holes, especially on a concrete slab floor. It's so confusing when I try to figure out what those two plastic blocks are. Can't they have an adjustable space in the plastic drain connector for these blocks, instead of using a paper template? Toto manufacturer is so stupid. I purchased it for $250. If you install a bidet, you have to first attach an adapter from Toto. "

" Misleading photo!!! WashletC100 does not work with CST414M Aquia!! The Aquia's tank design does not allow anywhere to fit the washlet's adaptor valve !!! I bought both the Aquia and the Washlet when I saw this photo because I thought they were compatible!!! Does anyone has any suggestion or where I can find an outside adaptor that will work for this?? " Bought two of these. The first one took a master plumber an hour to install on the tile floor.it works great, Looks great and flushes great. Thanks guys for the tip on the scouring action. I'll watch for this. The second TOTO with the same plumber took four hours and it is a day later watinig for a replacement due to leaks. maybe if I had seen this forum on tightening the bolts and the washer idea I would have it in working order by now. He's back on the job tomorrow and I'll share all this wisdom with him. Thank you! "

" Toilet looks very nice and compact. I really like the looks. There goes the good part, now comes the bashing. The install is a pain in the A..I had to buy a different drill bit for drilling into the concrete floor and just a FYI, drilling into concrete is not easy. The size bits that they tell you to use is not even the correct size.I had just put tile into this bathroom so I wasn't too happy about drilling 6 holes in my tile. The flush mechanism is not bad. There is one major problem though. If you use no.2 the bowl will stain so you pretty much have to keep a brush next to the toilet and clean it everytime you take a dump. This really sucks since this toilet will get the most use from me and my guest.I know I wouldn't want to clean someone elses toilet when I go visit their house and take a dump.Even if you flush twice this still does not take away the stain.I heard and read good reviews on Toto toilets but most of them are priced $500 on up and I'm not crazy enough to spend that kind of money on a toilet. I spent roughly $350 on this toilet and even that seems a bit outrageous to me.I must have got a hold of one of their lower end one because this toilet gives Toto a bad name.I only gave it a 4 overall rating because I like the look. But like everything in life, if you purchase it for the look, its more likely that the functionality is crap.
